Canvas, puppets and a litle story from Spain - We are the hero of our own story of art

Hello and welcome!

This summer me and my family spent 14 days in South Spain, in a litle town called Albir. We had some excursions around in other cities, including Altea. And in the evenings around the beautiful church on the hill, there were many markets and lovely little art shops. There was an artist who sold marionette puppets. He made the puppets, while his wife sewed the clothes for them. The girl puppet just spoke to me when we - me and my husband passing by. I saw her in the wonderfully vibrant eyes and she talked to me. Can you imagine?

I just had to buy her and bring her home with me. Then I saw another puppet. He was so - should I said creepy (?), that he became beautiful. He spoke to me to. He also want to go home to Norway with us.

The artist is Begoña García og Miguel Lopez de Aguileta who has their own small business as they call Etcetera Marionetas. They have made those beautiful puppets since 1991. Each puppet is unique, hand-molded paper pulp, painted with watercolors and oil paintings and exclusive costumes for each piece. I must admit; I falled in love ♥

They were carefully wrapped both in bubble wrap and brown paper. The brown paper was a bit special, as you can see

so well at home again I wanted to create something where I could use the beautiful wrapping paper and here is the result:

What do you think?
I've used the same colors as the puppets, and when we have decided where and on what they will be resting on, the canvas will hang among them..... I think....

Here is a step by step for this peace of art:

I crumpled the paper a bit and glued it on canvas.

Took my brush and gesso wash all over the canvas and stamp some image here and there.

I've used Archival ink for stamping because this ink is waterproof when dry.

I stamped the face image on tissue paper and glue it down with Matt Gel Medium, I did the same with the butterflies and the clown. The butterflies are from different tissues as I carefully cut out and glued down with Matt Gel Medium.

The butterfly on the left hand side is one of Tim Holtz tissue paper, and the clown is a cut from a design paper.

I mixed up modeling paste with something purple sand.

and with help from a stencil I made some patterns here and there

A while ago I bought a stack of old notes from an acquaintance on facebook and I think that just this piece by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnsom suits perfect for this use - "Just som jeg favned dit liv" - "Just as I embraced your life." That's exatly what this puppet artist did, he embraced my life with his unique art. Well, lets go on :)

I stamped this centence on the gesso washed notes with black Archival Ink and cut them out and used some Distress Ink Black Soot around the edges.

Then I glued down all the cut outs butterflies and some hearts from the same wrapping paper. I've used my white Posca pen and some Perfect Pearls and make some dots on the butterfly wings and body. And some black splashes with my black Posca pen.

I painted this frame with Dylusions Paint in color Pomegranate Seed.

and used some adhesive pads to attach it to the clown.

As you may see from the picture I have used Inktense pencil and water brush to create shadows and white Gelatos to make some highligths around the butterlies and the hearts.

Here's some close ups both of the puppets and the canvas:

And here is a picture of me and the puppet artist in Altea, Spain:

  1. Hi Anita! I am loving your art piece for Creative Carte Blanche. What a wonderful way to repurpose that unique paper your puppets were wrapped in. Love all of your layers on your canvas. The butterflies are fabulous! And...I adore your puppets. You are right; the one is a little creepy. It so different, how could you not fall for him?
